Saudi Arabia and Iran agreed on Friday to restore diplomatic ties after years of tensions and to open embassies in each other's countries within two months.
According to Saudi Arabia's official news agency SPA, this development is in response to the outstanding initiative of President Xi Jinping of the People's Republic of China and China's support for the promotion of good relations between Saudi Arabia and the Islamic Republic of Iran. '
"The three countries have announced that an agreement has been reached between Saudi Arabia and the Islamic Republic of Iran."
"This includes an agreement between them to resume diplomatic relations and reopen their embassies and missions within a two-month period, and in this agreement states' sovereignty," the statement said, according to the official news agency. It includes the affirmation of respect and non-interference in the internal affairs of States.'
The two countries have also agreed that their foreign ministers will meet to discuss the implementation of the agreement, arrangements for the return of their ambassadors, and ways to enhance bilateral relations.
According to the text of the agreement, Riyadh and Tehran also agreed to activate the 2001 Security Cooperation Agreement and the 1998 Agreement on Trade, Economy, and Investment.
The agreement was signed by Iran's top security official Ali Shamkhani and Saudi Arabia's National Security Adviser Mosaad Bin Mohammad Al-Aiban.
