The appointment of the new chairman of NAB, who is Lieutenant General Retired Nazir Ahmed?

 


The government has appointed Lt Gen Retired Nazir Ahmed as Chairman National Accountability Bureau (NAB) in place of Aftab Sultan.

Aftab Sultan resigned from his post on February 21 and Deputy Chairman NAB Zahir Shah was acting as acting chairman in his place.

According to the notification issued by the Ministry of Law on Saturday, "Lt. Gen. Retired Nazir Ahmed has been appointed for a period of three years."

The notification states that "Lt. Gen. Retd. Nazir Ahmed has been appointed after consultation and consensus between the Prime Minister and the Leader of the Opposition."

"The appointment of Lieutenant General Retired Nazir Ahmed has been made under Clause 6 of the NAB Amendment Ordinance 1999."

Who is Lieutenant General Retired Nazir Ahmad Butt?

Lt Gen Retd Nazir Ahmad Butt was also the 30th President of the National Defense University (NDU) from April 2016 to December 2016.

Nazir Ahmad Butt was commissioned into the 40 Frontier Force Regiment in 1983 and then studied at Command and Staff College and NDU.

Apart from Corps Commander Peshawar, he has also commanded an infantry division in the former Tribal Areas (FATA) and was the Commander of the Pakistan Military Academy Kakul



In 2014, Nazir Ahmad Butt was promoted as Lt. General and later served as Inspector General of Communication and Information Technology at Army General Headquarters (GHQ).

Before his retirement in 2018, he commanded the army in South Waziristan as a Major General.

The new chairman of NAB, Lt. Gen. Retd. Nazir Ahmad Butt has previously been Pakistan's military attaché in the US and military secretary to two prime ministers, Shaukat Aziz, and Yousuf Raza Gilani.
Lieutenant General Retired Nazir Ahmed Butt has also received Pakistan's second-highest award 'Hilal Imtiaz'.
